THE JOURNAL

Back outside.
Start with a walk.

Not every moment of movement needs equipment or a gym. Sometimes it begins at your front door.

Movement that fits your week

The CDC includes brisk walking as an example of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. Activity can be spread across shorter periods during the week; it does not have to happen in one long session.

Find daylight and context

Light and darkness help regulate the sleep-wake cycle. The NIH includes time outdoors, when possible, in its healthy sleep suggestions. This does not require looking at the sun or unprotected exposure.

Keep it simple and adaptable

Choose an accessible route, a time that suits the weather and a way of moving that fits your abilities. A walk can be an opportunity for a pause. It is not a treatment or a promise of a longer life.
